4 Essential Oils to Help Beautify Your Hair While Staying at Home

Chances are, the longer this lockdown lasts, the more you’re beginning to appreciate all of the little things in life.  One of those little things is undoubtedly the privilege of having access to a hairstylist.  When we all emerge from the seclusion of our homes, we can probably expect to join long lines of people desperate to get an appointment at the hairdresser.  Until that glorious day comes, there’s simply no choice but to take matters into your hands and personally beautify your hair.  The bad news is, there’s a 90% chance you’ll do a terrible job.  The good news though is that with the right essential oils, you can actually end up enhancing your hair by nourishing it with enriching compounds.

     What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated, naturally-occurring, chemical compounds which are extracted in their purest form from plants. Concentration is an important characteristic of essential oils because this is what gives them pharmaceutical properties. The dense molecules in essential oils change quickly from a solid to gaseous state at room temperature, which gives them strong fragrance. This also makes essential oils beneficial for therapies that require aromatic dispersion, topical application or ingestion. Essential oils particularly fight adverse symptoms by neutralizing inflammation and supplementing biological detoxification. There are several choices to pick from when it comes to essential oils, but here are four particular alternatives which are good for hair care:

     I. Sandalwood:
Sandalwood oil has an earthy, arboreal scent. It enhances mood, moisturizes skin, revitalizes hair, and diffuses well for aromatherapy.

     II. Ylang Ylang:
Derived from the Cananga tree, ylang ylang oil has a strong fragrance which makes it a popular cosmetic ingredient. Ylang ylang oils reduce stress, and contain protective properties which restore healthy skin.

     III. Rosemary:
Rosemary essential oil has a vibrant flowery fragrance that makes it desirable for culinary uses. Rosemary oils also nourish hair, and induce stress-relief.

     IV. Tea Tree Essential Oil:
Tea tree oil has a rustic, arboreal aroma. It contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which destroy pathogens and actively neutralize irritation caused by bacteria, yeasts, and fungi.

     General Application:
Most haircare essential oils are best used topically in combination with a mild or pH-balanced shampoo:
     1. Simply mix 18 drops of your desired essential oil to 1 teaspoon of the shampoo (feel free to multiply this mixture with a ratio of 18 essential oil drops to each individual teaspoon of shampoo).
     2. Massage this mixture thoroughly into your scalp as you would during a routine shower.
     3. Without rinsing off, wrap your shampooed hair in a warm towel and allow it to sit for an hour. This allows the oils to soak into your hair and activate their restorative properties.
     4. Once an hour has elapsed, unwrap the towel and massage one more dollop of shampoo into your hair to soften any previously caked-up shampoo.
     5. Rinse away all the shampoo from your hair with clean water.

Perform this routine once a week and your hair will start to glisten and glow in no time. When used as directed, essential oils shouldn’t cause any reactions or complications. However, if you happen to be particularly prone to allergies, always exercise caution before consuming any unknown substances. Do not exceed recommended dosages and do not ingest essential oils without guidance from a licensed medical professional.
