3 Keys to Help Keep Calm as Pandemonium Plagues the Planet

These are very frightening times.  There’s so much uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak that it’s difficult to get answers even for the most basic questions.  How dangerous is the virus really?  Will there ever be a good way to treat it?  How long will it take for things to get back to normal?  All of this ambiguity has a big impact on your mental health whether or not you realize it in the moment.  So, as events surrounding the virus continue to unfold, don’t forget the very important task of managing your stress.  Keep track of both your physical condition and your emotional state. If you notice any indications of stress, don’t sweep them under the rug.  Take action.  Here are a few tips on how to cope with the pressure of a public health crisis:

     I. Meditate:
More than ever before, this is the time to keep your emotions grounded through sober reflection and mental relaxation.  Yes, it’s appropriate to stay informed, especially considering that the situation is rapidly evolving, but be careful not to succumb to the frustration of information overload.  Take regular breaks from all of the updates to switch off the relentless media.  Allow your mind to momentarily exist in quietness, and use these pauses to build a broader perspective on what’s going on.

    II. Filter:
Society now lives in an era of misinformation, and misinformation can breed chaos.  As different channels of information compete for your attention, remember to be critical of the knowledge you consume, and who you rely on to keep abreast of things.  Avoid any and all sources of information which disseminate conspiracy theories or unsubstantiated stories.  Most of the time such sources are either trying to sell something, or provoke an extreme emotional response for malicious reasons.

     III. Make Conscientious Choices:
As long as the world is embroiled in a public health crisis, every lifestyle choice you make could genuinely end up saving lives.  That means it’s time to stop putting off healthy living, and it’s time to start doing everything in your power to maintain solid physical, mental, and emotional health.  Pace yourself between stressful activities and do things that help boost your immune system.  Get good rest, and get some therapy if you need it.  The more self-care you practice, the better chance you have of making it through this storm unscathed.

The harsh truth about COVID-19 is that it’s going to take a long time for things to feel normal again.  That means we all have to get comfortable with the habit of good stress-management.  Make a note of how you feel from one moment to the next.  Pay attention to whether any new information triggers compulsive responses within you.  Don’t allow yourself to start bingeing, worrying, or lashing out to cope with negative feelings.  Be constructive instead.  Take life one task at a time, and one day at a time.  A lot of what’s happening with the situation is beyond anybody’s control.  So, concentrate on living as healthily as possible, and avoid sinking into a state of panic by any means.
